The Gift of a Deadline

What would you do if you had less time?

If you knew you had only one year left, what would you stop postponing?

The conversation you keep meaning to have.

The place you keep saying you’ll visit.

The work you know you want to begin.

The people you want to spend more time with.

Setting a deadline can help you stop postponing what matters and take one meaningful step today.

What changes when you remember that time is limited?

For a long time, I thought of mortality as something distant—important in theory, but not relevant to an ordinary Tuesday.

Then I began to see how often we behave as if time is unlimited.

We wait for the right moment.

We put off the difficult conversation.

We assume there will be another chance.

But the future is never promised. And that thought, while sobering, can also bring life into focus.

When I remember that my time is finite, I become more careful about how I spend it. I pay closer attention to the people in front of me. I ask whether my choices reflect what matters to me or simply what feels easiest today.

The reminder doesn’t make every decision simple. It helps me notice which decisions I’ve been avoiding.

Here's the truth we're taught to avoid

How to Use a Deadline to Focus on What Matters

We often treat mortality as a source of fear to push away.

But in The Paradox of a Mortal Mind, mortality also serves as a measure of attention. It reminds us that our days are not interchangeable or endless. What we choose to do with them matters.

Knowing life is limited can make us more present—not less hopeful.

It can help us see that:

The ordinary afternoon deserves our attention.

The people we love deserve more than our leftovers.

The things that matter shouldn’t always wait for “someday.”

Our mortality doesn’t tell us exactly what to choose.

It asks us to choose with greater honesty.

"

When we concede that our time on earth is finite, we begin to give it more value.

— Michael Drake, The Paradox of a Mortal Mind

Core Lesson

A limited life invites intentional choices.

1. Time Gives Choices Weight

When we remember that time is finite, our priorities become clearer. We can ask whether today’s commitments deserve the time they’re taking.

2. Presence Is a Way of Valuing Life

Being present is more than noticing what’s around us. It’s choosing to participate in the moments and relationships we have now.

3. “Someday” Can Become a Hiding Place

Some plans need patience. Others need a first step. Remembering that time is limited can help us tell the difference.

This Week's Action

Think of one meaningful thing you’ve been postponing.

Choose one small step you can take this week:

Send the message.Make the plan.Set aside the hour.Begin the first page.

Then ask yourself:

If my time matters, what deserves more of it now?

A reflective collage shows a person at a crossroads surrounded by moments with loved ones, friends, nature, and creative work, with warm light and subtle clock imagery suggesting the value of limited time.

Ready to go deeper? The Paradox of a Mortal Mind explores how mortality invites us to stop merely consuming life and start participating in it. The Mortal Mind Debrief™ is coming soon. We’ll also be launching Mortal Mind Tiny Experiences™ and LEGACY COLLECTIVE™ soon.

If you're navigating grief, family distance, or the quiet weight of conversations that haven't happened yet, I'd be honored to work through it with you. I have a small number of 1:1 coaching spot available for people ready to do the real work.
