Energy Over Time

Profile silhouette with tree branches and colorful leaves inside. Text reads: "The Paradox of a Mortal Mind" by Michael Drake.

What truly energizes you… and what quietly drains you?

Not just what fills your calendar.

Not what looks productive on the outside.

But what actually leaves you feeling more alive after it’s done.

Some things give you energy the moment you step into them— a conversation that feels real, a walk without your phone, work that challenges you in the right way.

And some things… take from you.

Not dramatically.

Not all at once. But slowly.

The obligation you didn’t question.

The scrolling that never satisfies.

The routine that feels safe, but empty.

Here’s the hard part: We often organize our lives around time… instead of energy.

But time doesn’t determine the quality of your life. Energy does.

Here’s the Truth We’re Taught to Avoid

We’re taught to manage time.

Optimize it.

Schedule it.

Maximize every hour.

But you can fill every hour… and still feel exhausted, disconnected, and stuck.

Because time is neutral. Energy is not.

In The Paradox of a Mortal Mind, I talk about attention as the lens through which we experience life.

But attention requires energy.

And when your energy is low, scattered, or drained… even the best moments pass unnoticed.

Sustainability isn’t about doing less. It’s about doing what lasts.

It’s about building a life that fuels you back.

Because if something consistently drains you, it’s not sustainable—no matter how productive it looks.

And if something consistently energizes you, it’s not optional—it’s essential.

Quote from the Book

“You don’t just spend time—you spend energy. And the quality of your life is shaped by where that energy goes.”

This Week’s Action

Identify one habit that genuinely gives you energy.

Not the one you should do.

The one that actually makes you feel more like yourself.

Then protect it.

Schedule it.

Prioritize it.

Treat it like it matters, because it does.

Even if it’s just 10 minutes.

This isn’t about adding more.

It’s about sustaining what keeps you alive.

Because a meaningful life isn’t built on how much you can do… It’s built on what you have the energy to feel.
